Turning Pond Ecology into an Interpretive Experience for Families and Preserve Visitors

Overview

Champlain Area Trails wanted visitors to Essex Quarry Nature Preserve to notice more than the trail itself. The quarry pond supports frogs and other aquatic life that offered an opportunity for environmental education, particularly for children and families. Green Goat Maps researched, wrote, illustrated, and designed interpretive signage focused on amphibians and pond ecology.

This panel, titled "Quarry Pond Creatures," helps visitors identify frogs and dragonflies at Essex Quarry Nature Preserve. It showcases species like the bull frog, green frog, and leopard frog, along with dragonflies such as the Common Green Darner and Twelve-spotted Skimmer. A visual of the frog life cycle, from eggs to adults, adds an educational touch. Vivid illustrations and concise descriptions make it an engaging guide for nature lovers.

Scope of Work

To meet the needs of Champlain Area Trails, Green Goat Maps was contracted to research native frog species and habitat relationships; develop visitor-friendly ecological content; integrate additional plants and insects to explain the broader pond ecosystem; create illustrations and graphics; coordinate the design with existing preserve signage; and prepare the panels for durable outdoor production.

Key Deliverables

The finished interpretive signage combines species information, habitat descriptions, illustrations, and ecological context within an accessible visual format. Panels were produced in multiple dimensions for installation on kiosks and stone features.

Challenges & Solutions

The principal challenge was maintaining scientific accuracy without producing a text-heavy natural-history lesson. Green Goat Maps translated ecological information into concise interpretive language supported by strong visual elements, creating a product that can engage both children and adults.

Results & Client Value

The signage adds an educational layer to the preserve experience and gives CATS a way to connect everyday wildlife observations with larger ideas about habitat and conservation.
