Viall’s Crossing Signage

Enhancing Trail Accessibility and Visitor Experience at Viall’s Crossing

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) partnered with Green Goat Maps to develop a kiosk sign and map for Viall’s Crossing. The objective was to improve visitor experience by offering clear, accessible trail information and highlighting the trail's connection to Westport, NY. This initiative aligns with CATS’ mission of promoting land conservation and recreational access.

To achieve the project objectives, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:

  • Develop a detailed base map of Viall’s Crossing trail network using CATS-provided GIS datasets.

  • Design an informative kiosk panel that includes historical context, interpretive content, and trail highlights.

  • Incorporate a regional map to illustrate the trail’s proximity to Westport and integration into the broader trail system.

  • Produce an alternative scale map for brochure and web applications.

  • Coordinate with printers to ensure a high-quality, vinyl-wrapped DiBond sign.

A brochure about Viall's Crossing, a historic property protected by Champlain Area Trails (CATS). The left panel highlights its historical significance, conservation efforts, and role in the Split Rock Wildway wildlife corridor. The center features a map of trails, including Viall’s Crossing Trail and Harold’s Oak Grove Trail, with detailed routes and descriptions. The right panel provides visitor guidelines, emphasizing activities like hiking and wildlife observation, and acknowledges the traditional Kanienkehà:ka/Mohawk Nation territory.

The final project included a kiosk panel with a visually engaging and informative design, a custom trail map detailing the Viall’s Crossing network, an alternative map format suitable for brochures and digital applications, and a professionally printed, weather-resistant sign for long-term outdoor use.

Challenges of This Project

Integrating trail maps, historical narratives, and interpretive content into a single kiosk panel without overwhelming visitors was a key challenge. Achieving a balance between detailed information and user accessibility required concise text, clear typography, and engaging visuals. Additionally, ensuring the signage aligned with CATS’ mission of conservation and community engagement required a thoughtful design that emphasized sustainability.

Value for Our Client

The kiosk sign and map enhance visitor experience by providing clear navigation and trail safety information while also promoting local tourism by highlighting the trail’s connection to Westport. The weather-resistant, professionally printed sign ensures long-term usability, supporting CATS’ commitment to conservation and outdoor recreation in the Champlain Valley.

The new kiosk sign and map enhance visitor experiences by providing clear, actionable information for trail navigation and safety. By connecting the trail to Westport, the project also supports local tourism and economic growth. The signage effectively reflects CATS’ commitment to land conservation and its positive impact on the Champlain Valley.

The project delivered a visually appealing, durable kiosk sign and map. It features a detailed basemap of the Viall’s Crossing trail network with an inset showing proximity to Westport. The interpretive content and trail background offer enhanced visitor engagement. An alternative map scale was created for brochures and web applications. A high-quality, professionally printed, and weather-resistant sign was produced to ensure long-term usability and sustainability.
