Ecological and Cultural Connections Along the Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway
The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) collaborated with Green Goat Maps to create interpretive signage for the Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway. These signs highlight the unique natural and cultural heritage of the Hudson River and surrounding regions, promoting sustainable tourism and community engagement. The project aligns with ANCA’s mission of fostering economic and environmental sustainability in Northern New York.
To meet the needs of ANCA and the community, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:
Develop a unifying theme and six sub-themes for interpretive panels, focusing on topics such as ecology, history, recreation, and conservation.
Design and produce six interpretive panels with custom maps, illustrations, and narratives, highlighting the scenic and cultural features of the Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway.
Conduct stakeholder meetings and site research to determine optimal panel locations for maximum engagement and visibility.
Create supplemental materials, including tri-fold brochures and digital assets, to support the signage project and broaden its outreach.
Coordinate the production and installation of the interpretive panels, ensuring compliance with NYSDOT and NYSDEC guidelines.
The project delivered a cohesive theme and six sub-themes that encapsulate the cultural, ecological, and recreational significance of the Hudson River region. Six high-quality interpretive panels were created, featuring detailed maps, custom illustrations, and engaging narratives tailored to diverse audiences. Supplemental outreach materials, such as brochures and digital assets, were also developed to enhance public awareness and education about the Scenic Byways program. These professionally installed panels were strategically placed along the byway to ensure durability and accessibility.
Challenges of This Project
One of the primary challenges was balancing comprehensive interpretive content with accessibility and aesthetic appeal. To address this, Green Goat Maps employed concise, engaging narratives paired with visually appealing designs that cater to a wide audience. Ensuring stakeholder alignment and meeting compliance standards for installation added further complexity, which was mitigated through effective collaboration and planning.
