Downtown and Regional Cartography Supporting a Village Revitalization Initiative

Overview

As the Village of Saranac Lake invested in downtown improvements through New York's Downtown Revitalization Initiative, it needed updated wayfinding maps that could support residents and visitors while fitting into existing public infrastructure. Green Goat Maps developed a new cartographic system for downtown Saranac Lake, Moody Pond, and the surrounding region.

Scope of Work

Green Goat Maps was contracted to create a new base map; map points of interest, natural amenities, services, and transportation connections; develop regional, downtown, and Moody Pond views; fit the designs within existing kiosk dimensions; and prepare the mapping for additional web and print applications.

Key Deliverables

The final system includes detailed downtown mapping, inset mapping for Moody Pond, regional orientation, a comprehensive legend, and flexible artwork suitable for multiple kiosk sizes and communication formats.

Challenges & Solutions

Wayfinding maps have to be detailed enough to answer questions while being read quickly in a public space. Green Goat Maps simplified the visual hierarchy around destinations and orientation, while using insets to provide additional detail without overloading the primary map.

Results & Client Value

The Village received an updated mapping system aligned with broader downtown revitalization and Complete Streets objectives and adaptable to both existing kiosks and other community communication needs.
