Helping Adirondack Visitors Explore Beyond the Most Heavily Used Destinations

Overview

The Town of Keene needed more than a recreation map. As a gateway to the Adirondack High Peaks, the community wanted to help visitors discover a broader range of destinations while communicating responsible recreation practices and reducing pressure on the area's most heavily visited locations. Green Goat Maps developed an 11 × 17-inch folding recreation brochure that combines regional orientation, detailed destination mapping, and visitor education.

A person with gray hair uses a power drill to install signage above the entrance of a small brown wooden building labeled “WILD WALK.” A red ladder leans against the wall, and a large trail map with descriptions is displayed on the side of the building. Green trees and shrubs surround the area on a sunny day.

Scope of Work

To meet the needs of the Town of Keene, Green Goat Maps was contracted to design an 11 × 17 tri-fold brochure with a Z-fold layout; create a custom base map of the town and surrounding peaks and valleys; identify and number trailheads and points of interest; develop three detailed inset maps for high-use locations; write responsible-recreation content, including camping guidance and Leave No Trace messaging; and prepare the product for print and digital distribution.

Key Deliverables

One side of the finished brochure functions as a comprehensive recreation map, while the reverse provides concise visitor information. Three inset maps add detail where parking, trailheads, and other destinations require a closer view.

Challenges & Solutions

Keene's central communication challenge was encouraging recreation without simply directing more visitors to already crowded destinations. The design therefore combines wayfinding with stewardship messaging and gives less-familiar locations enough geographic context to become viable alternatives.

Results & Client Value

The Town now has a single visitor-facing resource that supports tourism, trip planning, and responsible recreation simultaneously. Instead of treating recreation promotion and resource stewardship as separate goals, the brochure uses mapping to support both.
