Creating Informative and Durable Signage for Visitor Engagement
Green Goat Maps collaborated with the Adirondack Land Trust (ALT) to design and produce a trail map and interpretive signage for the Westport Preserve. This 378-acre preserve in the Champlain Valley required updated trail information and educational content to enhance visitor experience. The project emphasized the integration of ecological and recreational narratives with a high-quality map and durable sign design, supporting ALT’s conservation mission.

To meet ALT’s needs, Green Goat Maps was contracted to:
Draft trail maps for the preserve and the Champlain Valley, including boundaries, trails, and contour lines.
Develop interpretive messaging and educational content to highlight the preserve’s ecology, history, and recreational opportunities.
Create custom illustrations and integrate them into the sign design, enhancing its visual appeal and educational value.
Design the interpretive panel layout, incorporating all elements into a cohesive and engaging format.
Coordinate printing and production of the signage, ensuring it met durability standards for outdoor use.
This project delivered two highly detailed maps tailored for the Westport Preserve and the Champlain Valley region. The trail map included precise trail data, accurate geographic boundaries, and a visually engaging layout to enhance user navigation. Additionally, the interpretive content featured custom illustrations and educational insights into the preserve’s ecology, history, and recreational opportunities. A durable and weather-resistant interpretive sign was produced to ensure long-term usability, providing visitors with an informative and enjoyable experience.
Challenges of This Project
Balancing the need for detailed content with a user-friendly design was a significant challenge. The project required integrating trail maps, ecological narratives, and interpretive elements into a single panel without overwhelming the audience. This was addressed through a thoughtful layout, clear typography, and the use of visually engaging illustrations.
Additionally, ensuring the signage reflected ALT’s conservation goals was critical. The design needed to convey the preserve’s ecological importance while aligning with ALT’s mission to educate and inspire visitors. Green Goat Maps worked closely with ALT to achieve this balance, resulting in a product that met both functional and educational objectives.
