Explaining Two Different Landscapes Within One Preserve

Overview

The Nature Conservancy wanted visitors to Boquet River Nature Preserve in Willsboro to understand the ecological processes and history visible from two different trailheads. Green Goat Maps created two interpretive panels—one for the River Trailhead and one for the Upland Trailhead—supported by custom mapping, illustration, and visitor-friendly storytelling.

This informational sign introduces the Boquet River Nature Preserve, focusing on the floodplain forest ecosystem shaped by the river’s natural flooding cycles. It highlights key habitats like riparian buffers, backwater sloughs, and cliff communities, which support diverse wildlife, including fish, amphibians, and plants. The sign emphasizes conservation efforts and invites visitors to explore trail treasures, including floodplains and mineral-rich cliffs. A detailed map and descriptions encourage responsible enjoyment of the preserve’s natural beauty.

Scope of Work

Green Goat Maps worked with TNC to identify interpretive priorities including floodplain forest ecology, salmon spawning, forest succession, wildlife, and local history; developed a preserve basemap; created interpretive storylines and illustrations; designed the panel layouts; incorporated iterative client feedback; and coordinated durable outdoor production.

Key Deliverables

Two site-specific panels provide orientation while interpreting distinct ecological themes associated with the river and upland portions of the preserve.
