Trail Mapping and Visitor Brochure for Sleeping Giant State Park

The Sleeping Giant Park Association, a nonprofit organization supporting Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, Connecticut, wanted to replace its existing maps with a more professional and consistent system for helping visitors explore the park. With families, casual hikers, student groups, and experienced trail users all using the same extensive trail network, the Association needed a map that was detailed enough for navigation but still easy to understand.

Green Goat Maps developed a new map of Sleeping Giant State Park incorporating the trail network, topography, hydrology, infrastructure, trailheads, and destinations such as waterfalls and scenic lookouts. We designed the map with an 11" x 17" format that could serve as the foundation for a free tri-fold visitor brochure and downloadable PDF.

A key goal was to create one strong cartographic design that could work across different formats rather than developing disconnected maps for each use. We worked with the Association’s GIS data and trail information to create a consistent visual system that visitors could recognize whether they were planning their trip at home or carrying a brochure on the trail. The same mapping also provides a foundation for digital and future trailhead applications.

One Map, Multiple Ways to Reach Visitors

A well-designed recreation map can do much more than fill a brochure. Green Goat Maps creates core cartography that can be adapted across printed brochures, waterproof trail maps, downloadable PDFs, kiosks, and digital applications.

This approach gives parks and recreation organizations a consistent visitor experience while making it easier to expand or update their mapping as needs change.
