Coastal Rivers Panels

Green Goat Maps partnered with Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust to create a coordinated series of interpretive kiosk panels for four properties in Maine’s Damariscotta–Pemaquid region: Keyes Woods, Castner Brook Community Forest, LaVerna Preserve, and Round Top Farm. The project was designed to strengthen the visitor experience across the preserve network while supporting the Trust’s broader goals of conservation, water quality protection, public access, education, and community stewardship.

Each panel combines site-specific cartography, interpretive storytelling, visitor guidance, and Coastal Rivers’ visual identity within a clear and accessible layout. Using the Trust’s existing style guide as a foundation, we developed a distinctive and consistent visual style for the panels that can also serve as a model for future signage across the preserve network. Our team refined the underlying GIS data, incorporated new trail alignments, and created maps that help visitors understand trail routes, property features, and access considerations.

Together, the four panels establish a cohesive trailhead communication system that is welcoming to first-time visitors, useful to returning trail users, and adaptable for future sites. Developed in support of a Community Outdoor Recreation Assistance grant from the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation, the project demonstrates how thoughtful mapping and interpretive design can improve outdoor access, deepen public understanding, and help conservation organizations tell the stories of the landscapes they protect.
