Using Mapping and Communication to Address Athlete Safety and Community Concerns

Overview

IRONMAN Lake Placid brings athletes into communities where training and event-related activity share public roads with residents. Organizers needed a way to communicate road-safety expectations, community concerns, local laws, emergency information, and geographic context before problems occurred. Green Goat Maps developed an Athlete Conduct Map and Guide for the 2022 event.

Scope of Work

Green Goat Maps was contracted to map the race area, local communities, and training routes; organize road-safety and athlete-conduct expectations; highlight applicable laws and emergency resources; include community context; and coordinate distribution through the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism to hotels and storefronts.

Key Deliverables

The final 13 × 19-inch guide combines mapping, safety information, athlete expectations, and community information in a format suitable for print and digital distribution.

This guide highlights the Adirondack High Peaks region, known for its breathtaking scenery, outdoor adventures, and the IRONMAN Lake Placid event. It features iconic locations like Lake Placid, Wilmington, and Saranac Lake, with attractions such as Whiteface Mountain and Mirror Lake. Celebrating the region’s vibrant communities and rich history, the guide also honors the Kanien’kehá:ka/Mohawk Nation as the traditional stewards of the land.

Challenges & Solutions

The guide needed to communicate expectations clearly without reading like a rulebook. Green Goat Maps organized information geographically and by practical user need so athletes could understand not just the rule, but the place and community in which it applied.
