One Mapping System for a Complex Four-Season Recreation Venue

Overview

Mount Van Hoevenberg serves international athletes, recreational visitors, tourists, and local users across a complex network of trails, facilities, and seasonal activities. ORDA needed mapping that could support this diversity without overwhelming users. Green Goat Maps developed a multi-season cartographic system integrating trails, infrastructure, visitor amenities, wayfinding, and venue information.

This is a detailed trail map of Mt. Van Hoevenberg, showcasing a network of trails for various activities such as skiing, sliding, and hiking. The map includes clearly marked trail loops, color-coded based on difficulty levels, junction numbers for navigation, and key amenities like the Mt. Pass Lodge, parking areas, picnic spots, and bridges. A dedicated sliding track is prominently highlighted near the lodge. Contour lines and elevation details provide a clear understanding of the terrain. The map is designed for clarity and utility, ensuring a great experience for visitors exploring this recreational area.

Scope of Work

To meet ORDA's needs, Green Goat Maps was contracted to map trails, ski areas, infrastructure, natural features, and recent improvements; distinguish winter and summer recreational systems; incorporate points of interest, difficulty information, and You Are Here orientation; align the design with ORDA branding; and prepare products for both printed and georeferenced digital use.

Key Deliverables

The finished map system represents trail networks, amenities, buildings, and visitor infrastructure within a consistent visual hierarchy. Outputs included durable printed applications and georeferenced digital files suitable for platforms such as Avenza Maps.

The same landscape functions very differently depending on season and user type. Green Goat Maps established visual distinctions between activities while maintaining enough consistency that visitors can recognize the venue and orient themselves regardless of season.
