Online Maps for Chautauqua County Tourism

Enhancing Trail Accessibility Through Interactive and Printable Mapping Solutions

This is a detailed map of Chautauqua County, highlighting trails and recreational features. The map includes labeled trails, parks, lakes, and public land areas, such as Chautauqua Lake, alongside clear icons representing amenities like campgrounds, trailheads, and parking areas. It provides an overview of the region, bordered by Lake Erie to the north and extending toward Pennsylvania in the south.

Green Goat Maps partnered with Chautauqua County to develop an interactive online mapping platform showcasing over 250 miles of publicly accessible trails. Designed to improve trail accessibility and visitor engagement, this platform integrates custom web mapping tools alongside a series of printable cartographic maps available for offline use. These resources ensure seamless navigation for outdoor enthusiasts exploring Chautauqua County’s extensive trail network.

Green Goat Maps was contracted to:

  • Develop an interactive online mapping platform to display trails with filtering options.

  • Implement Python-coded dropdown filters to categorize trails by activity type.

  • Integrate custom tooltips providing information on parking amenities, surfaces, distances, and ownership details.

  • Design a series of printable cartographic maps available for free download on Avenza Maps.

  • Ensure a seamless user experience across desktop and mobile platforms.

This is a screenshot of the Interactive Chautauqua County Trails Map platform. The interface highlights trail categories such as Conservancy Trails, County Trails, and DEC Forests & WMA, along with special categories like Rail Trails. A detailed map on the right visualizes trail networks, while the sidebar provides information about preserves and navigation options for various trail systems.

Chautauqua County required a mapping solution capable of effectively categorizing trails based on usage. We addressed this by implementing an interactive dropdown filter, allowing users to sort trails based on activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Challenges of This Project

Creating an interactive mapping platform that effectively categorized over 250 miles of trails by activity type was a key challenge. This required the development of Python-coded dropdown filters and custom tooltips to provide users with detailed trail information, including parking amenities, surface types, distances, and ownership details, while maintaining a user-friendly interface. Additionally, designing printable cartographic maps optimized for offline use, with QR codes linking to digital versions, posed the challenge of ensuring consistency and usability across both digital and physical formats.

Value for Our Client

The mapping solutions significantly improved trail accessibility and visitor engagement for Chautauqua County. The interactive platform, featured on the “Choose CHQ” website, allows users to easily filter trails by activity and access detailed information for seamless navigation. The accompanying downloadable maps on Avenza Maps enhance offline usability, making the trails accessible even in areas with limited connectivity. These resources deliver a comprehensive, multi-platform solution that supports outdoor exploration and strengthens regional tourism.

By integrating an intuitive online mapping system with downloadable Avenza Maps, we provided a seamless navigation experience across multiple platforms. QR codes embedded within the printed maps enable instant access to digital versions, ensuring effortless use in the field. These solutions enhance outdoor exploration while making Chautauqua County’s trail network more accessible and user-friendly.

The project successfully delivered a live, interactive mapping platform now featured on Chautauqua County’s “Choose CHQ” website. The intuitive interface allows users to filter trails by activity type while accessing detailed tooltips about trail amenities and conditions. In addition to the web-based solution, a series of high-quality cartographic maps were designed for easy printing and free digital download via Avenza Maps, providing offline accessibility for all trail users.
