Accessible Riverwalk Mapping, Wayfinding, and Interpretive Signage for Saranac Lake, New York

The Village of Saranac Lake, New York, wanted to improve how residents and visitors navigate and experience the Saranac Lake Riverwalk, an important pedestrian connection through the heart of the community. The Village needed a coordinated wayfinding system, clear map, and interpretive signage that would make the route easier to follow while connecting people with downtown businesses, public spaces, local landmarks, and the Saranac River.

Green Goat Maps developed a comprehensive mapping and signage system for the Riverwalk. The project included a custom digital interactive map, a printed Riverwalk brochure and pocket map, large trailhead kiosks at key access points, interpretive panels at important locations, and smaller on-trail wayfinding signs. Together, these elements provide consistent navigation before and during a visit.

Accessibility was an important part of the project. We designed the system to clearly identify accessible routes and amenities and incorporated accessible design practices such as high-contrast graphics, readable text, universal symbols, and QR codes connecting physical signs and printed materials with the online map. The interpretive panels also provide opportunities to share the Riverwalk’s cultural, historical, and environmental stories while helping visitors understand where they are and where they can go next.

By approaching the Riverwalk as one connected visitor experience rather than a collection of individual signs, Green Goat Maps helped the Village create a consistent system across digital maps, printed materials, trailhead kiosks, and on-trail signage. The result supports easier exploration of the Riverwalk while strengthening its connection to downtown Saranac Lake and the surrounding community.
