Comprehensive Trail Map and Visitor Brochure for White Memorial Conservation Center

The White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield, Connecticut, manages the White Memorial Conservation Center, an extensive conservation and recreation property with more than 40 miles of trails and over 50 entrances. The Foundation needed a new visitor map that could make this large and complex trail system easier to understand while also showing natural areas, facilities, access points, property boundaries, and different types of trail use.

Green Goat Maps created a comprehensive new property map and designed it for use as a folded visitor brochure. The map brings together trails, roads, trailheads, points of interest, water features, forests, fields, wetlands, property boundaries, and other important infrastructure. We also incorporated information explaining the trail-blaze system and provided space for information about supporting the White Memorial Foundation.

One of the challenges was presenting a significant amount of information while making the map easy to use. We worked from the ground up to organize the property’s geographic information into a clear visual hierarchy, while retaining elements of the character of White Memorial’s previous map. The same cartography was also prepared for digital use, including a GeoPDF designed for use with Avenza Maps so visitors can navigate with the map on their phones.

The result gives White Memorial a versatile mapping system that can serve visitors in print and digital formats while also providing an updated geospatial foundation that can support future map revisions and property management.
