The Nature Conservancy Trailhead Kiosk Series
Accessible Trailhead Kiosk Design and Preserve Mapping for The Nature Conservancy
The Nature Conservancy’s Adirondack Office worked with Green Goat Maps to develop a series of trailhead kiosks for preserves throughout the Adirondack region of New York. The organization wanted a consistent kiosk system that could be used across multiple preserves while providing visitors with clear information about trails, recreation, conservation, and accessibility.
Green Goat Maps developed a flexible kiosk design system that could be adapted to the individual needs of each preserve. The project included kiosk panel templates, preserve-specific layouts, interpretive content, trail accessibility descriptions, and custom illustrations.
A major focus of the project was making accessibility information useful to visitors. Rather than simply identifying trails as accessible or inaccessible, the kiosks were designed to communicate specific trail characteristics and potential barriers so visitors could make informed decisions based on their own needs and abilities.
The resulting approach gave The Nature Conservancy a consistent and scalable system for communicating visitor information across its preserves while allowing each kiosk to reflect the unique trails, accessibility features, recreational opportunities, and conservation story of its location.
